Peer Review Process

JELMaR (Journal of Educational Learning and Mathematics Research) is a peer-reviewed journal published by the Mathematics Education Study Program, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Universitas Wisnuwardhana Malang. All manuscripts submitted to this journal undergo a rigorous double-blind peer review process, in which neither the authors nor the reviewers know each other’s identities. This process aims to ensure the quality, originality, scientific contribution, and academic integrity of published articles.

All accepted articles are published online as open-access publications and can be freely accessed by readers worldwide. The final decision regarding manuscript acceptance is made by the Editor-in-Chief based on the recommendations of reviewers and editors. All submitted manuscripts are screened for plagiarism using plagiarism detection software before entering the review process.

The peer-review process at JELMaR consists of the following stages:

1. Manuscript Submission

Authors submit their manuscripts through the JELMaR online submission system (Open Journal Systems/OJS). The manuscript must comply with the journal's author guidelines, manuscript template, and ethical standards.

Authors are required to confirm that the manuscript is original, has not been published previously, and is not under consideration by another journal.

2. Initial Editorial Assessment

Upon submission, the Editor-in-Chief or Managing Editor conducts a preliminary evaluation of the manuscript. This assessment focuses on:

  • Relevance to the journal's focus and scope;
  • Originality and novelty of the study;
  • Scientific quality and significance;
  • Compliance with the journal's formatting and submission requirements;
  • Language quality and clarity of presentation.

Manuscripts that do not meet the journal's standards or fall outside the scope of JELMaR may be rejected at this stage without external review.

3. Plagiarism Screening

All manuscripts that pass the initial editorial assessment undergo plagiarism screening using similarity detection software.

Manuscripts with excessive similarity, evidence of plagiarism, self-plagiarism, fabrication, falsification, or other forms of academic misconduct will be rejected or returned to the authors for clarification before proceeding to peer review.

4. Reviewer Assignment

The handling editor assigns the manuscript to at least two independent reviewers who possess expertise relevant to the manuscript's subject area.

Reviewers are selected based on:

  • Academic qualifications and expertise;
  • Research and publication experience;
  • Absence of conflicts of interest;
  • Availability to complete the review within the designated timeframe.

JELMaR applies a double-blind review system, ensuring that author and reviewer identities remain confidential throughout the review process.

5. Peer Review Process

Reviewers evaluate the manuscript according to several criteria, including:

  • Originality and novelty;
  • Relevance to mathematics education;
  • Theoretical foundation and literature review;
  • Research methodology;
  • Validity and reliability of findings;
  • Quality of analysis and discussion;
  • Contribution to mathematics education theory and practice;
  • Organization, clarity, and academic writing quality.

Based on their evaluation, reviewers provide one of the following recommendations:

  • Accept without revision;
  • Accept with minor revisions;
  • Accept with major revisions;
  • Resubmit for review;
  • Reject.

Reviewers also provide constructive comments and suggestions to assist authors in improving their manuscripts.

6. Editorial Decision

The editor evaluates reviewers' reports and makes one of the following decisions:

  • Accept Submission;
  • Revisions Required;
  • Resubmit for Review;
  • Decline Submission.

Reviewer comments are communicated anonymously to the authors through the journal system. When reviewer recommendations differ substantially, the editor may assign an additional reviewer before making a final decision.

7. Revision by Authors

Authors receiving a revision decision are required to revise their manuscript according to the reviewers' and editors' comments.

The revised submission must include:

  • A revised manuscript with highlighted changes (if requested);
  • A detailed response letter explaining how each reviewer comment has been addressed.

Failure to submit revisions within the specified period may result in withdrawal of the manuscript from the review process.

8. Secondary Review (If Necessary)

For manuscripts requiring major revisions, the revised version may be returned to the original reviewers for further evaluation.

For minor revisions, the editor may verify the revisions without sending the manuscript back to reviewers.

9. Final Acceptance

Once the editor is satisfied that all reviewer comments have been adequately addressed and the manuscript meets the journal's publication standards, the manuscript is formally accepted for publication.

The corresponding author will receive an official acceptance notification through the journal system.

10. Copyediting, Proofreading, and Publication

Accepted manuscripts proceed to the production stage, which includes:

  • Copyediting;
  • Layout editing;
  • Proofreading;
  • Metadata verification;
  • Final publication.

Authors will be asked to review page proofs before publication to ensure accuracy of content, author information, and formatting.

After final approval, the article is published online and becomes freely accessible through the JELMaR website under the journal's open-access policy.

Publication Ethics and Confidentiality

Throughout the review process:

  • Manuscripts are treated as confidential documents;
  • Reviewers must not share, distribute, or use unpublished materials for personal purposes;
  • Editors and reviewers must disclose any conflicts of interest;
  • Decisions are based solely on academic merit, originality, and relevance to the journal.
